Acid Reflux: Diet Guidelines

Although diet is not a known cause of acid reflux, what you do or don’t eat could certainly make a difference in the frequency and severity of occurrences. Also obesity is one of the leading causes and obviously what you eat and how much directly affects the majority of obese people. If you are over weight and suffering from GERD or acid reflux disease one of the first things albeit probably one of the hardest things is to change your lifestyle drastically all together. Being extremely over weight isn’t a healthy way to live in any medical respect, and the fact that it could indirectly or directly cause cancer is a good reason to eat a healthier balanced diet.

Some tips to keep the likelihood of incidence down are to eat smaller meals at one sitting. Eating larger meals makes the risk of your lower esophageal sphincter to malfunction greater because of a full stomach. Another option is to avoid late night snacks. If you’re someone who works late and has grown accustomed to late night dinners and find that this is frequent occurrence, (heartburn that is) than try staying up a little longer after a full meal. Stay away from foods that have high levels of acidity. Some examples of acidic foods are orange juice or anything citrus as well as tomatoes or tomato products, and vinegar.

A healthy diet and lifestyle is a key to quieting your GERD symptoms. While we all enjoy indulging in sinful habits like overeating on junk food, I’m sure you’d be less likely to stray from you regimen if you knew you’d find great relief from the pain linked to acid reflux. Some simple options that don’t require too much compromise are quitting or at least lessening your consumption of caffeine or carbonated drinks. Also overdoing with your friends can cause more than a hang over because alcohol is another culprit for acid reflux flare ups.

There are lots of things you can do to help ease your pain or the likelihood of it. After a meal chew non mint gum. The gum produces saliva which helps neutralize acid, and since mint is one of the don’ts to this make it mint free. Plan your meals wisely with beverages that won’t aggravate the situation, low fat or fat free milk, water, non citrus juices, or caffeine free tea are good alternatives to alcoholic or caffeine laden drinks we’re all used to. Also drinking a small glass of water after a meal helps to dilute and wash down any acid that’s splashed up during your meal. Recent studies have shown that high fiber diets not only help with weight loss b/c it keeps you fuller longer, but also have shown to help with acid reflux regardless of your weight. You can find good high fiber options with whole grains, fresh fruits and vegetables, basically anything unprocessed.

Diet is not an ugly word, and it isn’t meant to rule your life. It’s important to be healthy, and the food we eat greatly dictates how our body works and what happens within it. If you’re having trouble following a diet, or don’t know where to start try visiting your doctor or a nutritionist. It’s good to bring a spouse or a close friend with you for both moral support, and to help you stick to it!
